Imovie

This week was my first time using imovie and I was surprised how easy and fun it was. I have had my mac computer since June, but I had yet to use this program. I guess that I thought it would be extremely hard to use but to my surprise it was not. My group and I decided to do our project on teen dramas and why people watch them. I personally find this topic extremely interesting because I love and watch these shows religiously. I can't really explain why I love to watch Gossip Girl, The Hills, and The City; I certainly can't relate to their lifestyle. I'm sure that a part of me is envious in ways and love to escape into this dream world. I am also fascinated by the fashion.

We just finished our movie and since I was the only person with a mac I mainly put the movie together. What I thought would take me hours to do, took me an hour at most. Imovie made it so easy to add songs and transitions and cut down the film to fit perfectly into the movie. So far this is my favorite program on my mac and I can definitely see myself using it in the future. It is an amazing tool for the classroom and a great way to teach students. I also think that students would greatly enjoy using this program themselves and it should be taught it school. I felt as if it was a new and improved powerpoint. I really enjoyed making this project!!!

Reaction

Last class we talked about an extremely heavy topic, suicide. We spoke about why people feel the need to take their own life and how we as teachers should deal with this devastating act. I don't think that I would personally be able to talk to an entire class about the subject. It just seems too personal and emotional a topic to bring up in class. I definitely think that teachers have a responsibility to be available if students want to talk and counselors need to be available.

I was shocked after reading about what is on the web regarding suicide. How can people post ways to kill yourself and talk about it so freely as if it is something to brag about? The only people who commit this horrific act are severely ill and depressed people. Suicide is a serious problem and in many cases can be avoided with the correct guidance and support. I personally believe that counseling and strong relationships help prevent and are the key to helping someone though a difficult time. Websites condoning suicide is terrible and the worst thing that a suicidal person could look at. I personally believe that these sites should be banned. Looking at them in class made me sick.

It is scary that suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death for teenagers. As a teenager, I think that it is so important to look after all your closest friends and simply be there for them. Everyone has had bad days and gone through bad times, I know that some people more so than others, but strong relationships and talking to a trained professional can help greatly. Teachers need to be there for their students and report any behavior that could be questionable. Although teachers may not want to get involved in their students lives, they have an obligation to try to protect and help them. I know that when I was having a bad day, it always meant a lot when one of my teachers noticed and asked me how I was even if I didn't want to talk about it. Like it or not teachers play an important role in their student's lives.

Slumdog Millionaire

This week in class we watched, Slumdog Millionaire, one of the breakout movies of the year. I had watched it prior to the class because I had heard rave reviews and I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Just like Hollywood, I thought that the movie and the story was fascinating and agreed with all the praise it had been getting. I think what is most fascinating about this movie, and many other movies and TV shows, is the contrast from most peoples every day life. This film shows an entirely different world, something that is very hard to relate to. Hollywood and the general public is obsessed with this idea, whether it be the extremely wealthy or the poor and suffering. People love to watch others lives, lives that they cannot relate to. This can be a dangerous thing, especially since this leaves room for much exaggeration. I'm sure that India did not love the way their country was depicted. India seemed dirty and violent, while their people were corrupt and in poverty. I went on some websites and saw that the people of Mumbai Slum were insulted by the title of the movie, saying that they might be poor but were not dogs. To them, the title made them feel like animals. Hindus were also upset that they were shown killing Muslims and portrayed as violent and cruel people.

This movie is a perfect example of the power of television and film. They way people and places are depicted can have a profound impact on society. People who have never visited India and have only seen this movie will automatically have judgments about the County and culture. So much of what we see and know to be true is a result of media.

Most people think that people want to watch what they can relate to but the more I think about it the more I believe it is the opposite. I guess certain characteristics of characters in film and TV shows, I relate to and love but for the most part their lives I cannot relate to at all. I have no connection between the lifestyle and culture in Slumdog Millionaire as well as the TV shows I watch like gossip girl, Greys Anatomy, Privileged, Sex and the City. I think that two things that tie everyone to TV shows and films are the love stories and friendships. Those two relationships are constant throughout most societies. Yet, the settings in which most of these relationships take place are completely different from my life and the lives of most.

Technology Leadership

I am going to start this post with an important question posed in the chapter, "What three communications technologies have influenced you the most on a personal level?” After thinking about this question for a minute, I came up with the most obvious answers as stated in the chapter, television, cell phone, and computer/internet. As someone growing up in the 21st century, these technologies have become vital to my everyday life. It is true that books and printed literacy should be in almost everyone’s top three since most of our education has been based on that. The fact that the Internet and television are so important in our lives proves that they need to be implemented into education as well. This is not to say that printed books aren’t as important as ever, but there are other technologies equally significant.

Technology leadership is extremely important in schools today. Integrating technology into curriculum is no longer an optional action, but a vital and empowering tool that will only help our students. One of the main problems with technology integration is the money and time consuming aspect; this is no easy task. You must have the cooperation of the administration, principal, teachers, students, parents, and community. Each person plays a role in the success of technology in the classroom.

I greatly agree with the statement in the book that technology empowers individuals. The idea that children can have their voices heard because of technology is an amazing feat. The integration of technology allows children to learn on a much deeper level than ever before. This is the importance of technology leadership and why more teachers and districts need to invest in this idea. In order to invest in this idea, you can’t just send teachers to workshops where they sit and watch someone else play around with technology. For technology leadership to truly work, teachers need to be introduced to different forms of technology and have the means to play around with it and learn hands on while interaction with other teachers for different ideas.

Technology is obviously really costly and many school districts feel that it’s not a necessity. Personally, I think that it is one of the most important tools in a school. I know that my school district put it in the budget to put smart boards in every classroom within the next couple years. School districts need to pick and choose what is important to them and they should know the value of technology. If the principal is behind this process, as well as leads and implements, there is no limit to what you can do.

Basically, as a future teacher, I am extremely passionate about technology leadership. This basic idea is one of the main reasons why I took this class. I wanted to be able to learn more about the different programs and ways that I could use technology in the classroom or in my daily life.

Exploring Media

My exploring media project is focused on my University life. Coming from New York and beginning my freshman year at McGill University was both a scary and exciting experience. I had never lived on my own for a long period of time before and it was definitely a transition that I had to get use to. Walking through the McGill gates on my first day was overwhelming. It was so beautiful and there were so many people; it was hard to grasp that this is the place I was going to spend the next four years. I currently live in Molson Hall, one of the dormitories. It is all the way at the top of Rue University, which is quite a hike everyday. Over time, it has gotten easier and easier to walk, something that has become routine. I live in a one-person dorm room with 31 other kids my age on my floor. In the beginning it was difficult not knowing anyone but after a while these people became my friends and my family while I'm here. Everyday we eat together at Bishop Mountain Hall, our cafeteria. We have a five-day a week meal plan, which serves us breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Although the food is not my mother's home cooked meals, I have learned to live with it. On the weekends we all cook together in our tiny kitchen on our floor.

Since I started University, I will admit I have never worked so hard in my life. My schoolwork from High School doesn’t even compare to the work I have here. I have truly learned the importance of studying and staying on top of your work. You can’t fall behind because that will mess up your entire semester. I am also slowing figuring out what I want to do with my life. With each course I take, I learn more about my interests and myself.

One of the most difficult parts of University is being so far away from my parents and my home friends. I don’t know what I would do without the technology today. I can call or text my friends or family whenever I need them. The greatest invention for me is Ichat, which is a program on Mac computers. With a touch of a button, you can see anyone who has a webcam. To be able to see my parents and my friends on a constant basis is an amazing invention, it helps me from feeling homesick and staying focused on school. It is incredible the technology and how easy it is to communicate with anyone, anywhere.

Now that I have been here for 6 months, I have truly made friends that I will have for life. At the end of the day it is so nice to have people to be with and go out with. In university, it is so important to be able to wind down and relax after classes and all the work we do. These relationships help define my life here and help me through stressful times. My experience has just begun but I am so excited to see where these next four years take me and to see the person I become.

Reaction to Chapter 6- Chomsky, the Empire, and Media Literacy

It is scary to think about the influence the media has over feelings toward the government. The media can switch around any story and display it in any way they want. The public's opinion is solely based on the news and therefore they will believe almost anything they watch. Especially after 9-11, they played out the war on terror, as if it was a movie. Depicting us, American's, as the good guys who had to go after all terrorists and potential threats. The media was completely behind Bush and therefore so were most Americans. Once the war started to go down hill and it was evident that we were losing, the media, along with the American public, changed their views on Bush. I can't necessarily criticize the media because I have to admit that I am one of the American's who strongly disagreed with Bush's actions in the last couple years. However, when I sit back and think about the media's role in both my opinion and almost all American's it is astounding. I completely agree with the statement by Chomsky, "the fact that we killed and are killing huge numbers of people in Vietnam and Iraq for economic and geopolitical gain is not the issue in the public conversation in the United States. The fact that we did not/are not winning the war is the matter that concerns the media and most Americans." The truth behind that quote and the impact of the media is extremely frightening. However the war is played out in the media, is the war that we are going to believe and be concerned with.

This all relates to media literacy because it is our youth that can change this problem. They can think for themselves and learn the advantages and disadvantages to the news and other media outlets. I think that watching the news is really important for all children to do but at the same time they need to be informed about the impact it can have on opinions. As the media and access to news stories grow, this concern needs to be addressed.

I chose this quote for many different reasons. For one, I think its a beautiful quote and so true, it relates a lot to this class. I also chose it because last class we had a heated discussion on Oprah and everything she has done for the world and education. In terms of this class, our main goal is to understand the importance of media communication in education. As the world is changing technologically, our perception of communication is too. Being able to communicate to people all over the world and use the internet is extremely empowering and amazing. Knowledge is extremely powerful, something that no one can take away from you. It excites me that one day I can share knowledge with young people and give them the empowerment that they deserve.

As far as the Oprah debate, I personally agree with both sides of the argument. She is an amazing human being and to criticize all that she has done for the world is ignorant. Sometimes her choices are questionable and it seems that she could do more with less publicity. However, it is that publicity that motivates others to help. She truly does encourage people to empower themselves through her teachings and her actions.

Before last Monday's class, I had never thought about the types of TV shows we watch, and how they are mostly about rich and spoiled people. I have to admit that I love all those shows. I religiously watch Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, Sex and the City, The Hills, The City, and a bunch of other unrealistic shows. After class, I really thought about why TV shows focus on this lifestyle. Someone in class said that they thought it helped people get away from their problems and live in a dream world. To some extent I agree with that, I think that watching rich people on TV allows you to pretend for an hour that you are apart of that world; live out a fantasy. People always envy what they don't have and want to lead the lives that they watch on TV. In all the shows we watch, the characters have the most beautiful clothes, cars, and houses, all the materialistic items, which people think that they want. Although, it's not bad to fantasize a little about that lifestyle, it is sometimes taken a little too far. People can become too obsessed with the way the characters look in these shows, which is not realistic. Many of the actresses in the shows are extremely skinny and don't eat. Young girls are very impressionable, and it's unrealistic to want to look like the characters. There is also a big emphasis in these shows about sex and partying, which is scary for parents. I don't think anyone wants 14 and 15 year old girls and boys to think that everyone is having sex and drinking alcohol, staying out until all hours of the night. That lifestyle just isn't realistic and should not be something that all teens think is normal and acceptable.

One of the positives about many of these TV shows, is that they portray many of the characters as being sad and depressed. That shows that money doesn't buy happiness, and many of the plot lines revolve around that specific topic. I personally think that that is an important lesson for all children to learn. People, especially children can be very envious and it is important to know that living a certain lifestyle does not guarantee a good life. There is definitely a dark side to the affluent lifestyle.

What I am getting at, is not that these shows are bad because I personally love them, but that children can't take them too seriously. Parents should be aware of what their children watch and monitor it. I don't think that a 12 year old should watch sex and the city but they can certainly watch Greek. Children should also be aware that these shows are exaggerated and most people don't live in those conditions. It would be nice if more shows were about average and realistic families but that just doesn't seem to sell.

Responce to Reading (ch.1)

I personally believe that the media has an enormous control over everyone's life. In order to be successful today, it is vital to understand the ongoing phenomena. Our world is all about the media, between TV, movies, Google searching, and facebook, you can receive everything you would ever want and need through media technology. Living in a dorm as a first year student, I am able to do everything through my computer, whether it is watching all my TV shows, listening to my lectures, video chatting with my parents and friends, checking the weather, news reports, and staying connected with all my professors. There is hardly a need to leave my room, which is both scary and exciting. What is scary is that children are sometimes overtaken by the media and are not taught the harms and affects it can have. On the contrary, new technology is innovative and exciting, it allows you do explore and become much more informed.

As a person and a future teacher, I believe that media literacy is extremely important and should be a core class starting in early elementary school. There is so much more to media and technology than simply instant messaging and facebook, the Internet and different forms of media allows people to explore different ideas and problems, which face the world. To ignore the importance of media literacy is to completely ignore the world we live in. I personally don't have a protectionist view to media literacy education, although I do feel that proper media literacy must be taught to prevent abuse. If the media is used correctly, it won't be abused. The Media Arts Education approach is important, although I agree that it focuses too much on the self. Students need to learn to challenge the media, which will give them empowerment. Technology is an excellent way for both teachers and students to learn and understand different interpretations and viewpoints.

I also strongly agree with the point that media literacy is an excellent tool in the progression of democracy. The media shows people the importance of freedom of expression, especially the youth, whose ideas must be heard. Media provides "significant statements or insights about the social world, empowering visions of gender, race, and class" (17). Children need to find their own voice within the media and that can be done within the schools. With so much of our world revolved around technology, we can't ignore its vital place in schools.

Hello All,

Today we began class by introducing our names and explaining why we wanted to take Media, Technology, and Education. Then we spoke about the Mac setup and the control panel at the bottom of the screen. Afterward, we began to make our blogs for the semester, which I will use to post thoughts and analysis of readings and movies in class.  This blog will be a useful tool as a teacher and helpful in the classroom.
